Where We Are: The Hermit
In the Tarot, Virgo is associated with card 9, The Hermit. The Hermit has learned that material things matter little in the face of seeking truth and deep self knowledge. The outward energy of youth has fallen away, and the ego has taken a back seat to quest for evolution. The titles, identities and external securities we propped ourselves up with have begun to fall away as we seek to know ourselves stripped of the world. In the Our Tarot deck by Sarah Shipman this archetype is personified by the American poet Emily Dickinson. As a woman who lived most of her life in solitude, her voice and self knowledge have endured with power and truth that outshines many of her contemporaries. Dickinson used her writing to search and explore depths of herself that few of us take the time to plummet. She asks us 'what treasures of truth lay buried deep inside, just waiting for our attention to turn inward?'. The Hermit this month invites us to take some time for introspection, evaluation and discovery. If there is a time each day you can spend alone - even if it's five minutes- take it. Rekindle a meditation practice, or allow yourself to free write to help get in tune with inner voice. Pull back from spaces, people, or places that trigger comparison, jealousy, or feelings of insecurity based on external values (if you've been feeling like a social media fast this is a great time for it). The Hermit invites you to spend more time deeply listening to yourself and seeking your own wisdom first.
What We are Invited to Release: The Lovers RX
Often, The Lovers have been misunderstood as being all about romantic love and relationship. However, on a soul level this archetype shows us our relationship to self love through the balancing of our own Feminine/Yin/Lunar energy and Masculine/Yang/Solar energy. In the Marseille Deck this card is named The Lover (singular not plural), and invites us to look at our relationship to ourselves and then our relations with others. We are being invited to examine where we are perhaps out of balance in our attention and love, where are we searching externally for the love/validation/purpose/security that we can only find within ourselves. We are being invited to look at where we are caught in codependency, or relationships outside the self where we are giving too much, or seeking too much. Where can you release a need for love/attention/validation from someone else and instead provide that for yourself? The Hermit will help us in this quest to find the divine love within and work to balance and source from within in a way that will only strengthen and brighten our love of others.
What We are Invited to Embody: 7 of Cups
You may find that you have a number of choices facing you right now. . . or you may think that you need to make a choice to escape some discomfort you're experiencing. This card in conjunction with The Hermit invites us to draw inward, to not make choices just because you can, and especially to not make any choices based on what you think you 'should' do to please or prove to an external audience your worth or merit. Rather, we are invited to pause, go inward. Really look at the factors at play with any choice we are making and deeply tap into our own wisdom- to observe our gut feelings (the gut is as complex as the brain after all and has a deep knowing sense) and trust ourselves first. Wait for a YES that you feel in every cell that comes after listening deeply to yourself. Choosing 'good' things on the surface may seem like a way forward but will keep us spinning our wheels in the same mud. Only when we really tap into our inner wise woman/man/Hermit and go with the yes that lights up every cell will we make the forward movement we are craving.
What We are Invited to Embrace: The Magician
As we let go of seeking external validation and root in our own self love through making choices based on our gut knowing we are able to embrace the power of The Magician! Huzzah! This is how magic happens! When we source deep within we begin to discover the fire, magic and ideas that are entirely our own and we have the ability to bring them forward! The Magician knows how to make something out of seemingly nothing. They know how to balance their own fire/creativity, water/intuition, air/intelligence, and earth/physicality to bring forward their own unique magic. I love the choice to have Temple Grandin represent this archetype. Temple came into this life with a very unique and individual way of experiencing and interpreting the world. Rather than letting this cripple her, she learned to really go inward, trust her own instincts, voice and vision and as a result brought forward genius ideas that have revolutionized our relationship to animals and have radically altered (for the better) the cattle industry and other agricultural realms. We too have this ability to bring forward our unique magic and manifest our dreams as we let the Hermit guide us this month in deepening our self love and listening.
